SUPER PET
Original Pitch by John Cawley – September 1997

BEHIND THE STORY...
I thought the idea of a pet with super powers and multiple minds might be a fun mix. Took the idea to Warners TV. They liked it, but said they had to pass. The network had recently aired an animal series created by one of their top execs – ROAD ROVERS. The series was a gigantic failure. The exec declared the series failed because audiences were not interested in super hero animals. The development person explained, that even though their research showed kids would welcome super hero animals, the studio had taken a ‘hands off’ attitude to the concept. Other execs did not want to upset the powerful exec by green lighting a series that might succeed in the ratings and thus ‘upstage’ the exec.

A few years later, I pitched the idea to Cartoon Network. Upon hearing the title, I was told they were developing Krypto, Superman’s pet dog, as a series. I mentioned this proposal was not just about a super-dog, the exec responded, it “didn’t matter”.

And now my pitch...

SUPER PET
A Super-Hero with an Identity Crisis
An Animated Series Proposal by John Cawley

The newest super-hero on the scene, a super-powered German Shepherd, is never alone. He only has his powers when his two young masters, Storm and Rayne place the magic collar (left on Earth by an alien picnic group) on his neck. At the time they place the collar around Fritz’s neck, the minds of Storm and Rayne are absorbed into Fritz’s. Together, the three try to fight crime as each personality battles for control! Whether Fritz decides to chase a cat instead of a crook, or Storm wants to look at a new tech toy, or Rayne spots a favorite comic, the three must force each other to keep track of the criminal… who must listen to Fritz speak in three different voices. Talk about a split-personality super hero!
