Polar Pals
Original Pitch by John Cawley – April 30, 2004

BEHIND THE STORY...
This is one of those flash ideas that just pops into your head. I was in the mode of coming up with a series about two very different companions. I remember one exec had mentioned they wanted series that kept the characters contained to a regular area – a neighborhood, a school, a house, etc. I wanted to think of an area that would be somewhat unusual and suddenly thought of the North Pole. The idea of a youngster in such a desolate area seemed to be a good starting point. I tried to think of a classic image and came up with the boy and his sled dog. I always like to see if I can reverse the expected, so I decided to make the dog the true master. By using the concept of Native American mysticism, I added the ability of speech to the dog. The network listened, but seemed to feel that it was yet another ‘boy and his dog’ concept.

I repitched this in 2006. The new folks in development were very interested at first. What caught their attention was the location. A series set in a frozen wasteland seemed somewhat fresh to them. After several contacts, they seemed to have let it pass.

And now my pitch...

Polar Pals
Mystical Musher and Dishin’ Dog
An Animated Series Proposal by John Cawley

An arctic odd couple, this pair is never left out in the cold. Antok, the boy, is destined for greatness and has been given a magic amulet that allows him to inhabit the creatures of the wild. His guide and sled dog, Niko, is a lazy, talkative husky who would rather ride the sled than lead it. Together they take on people and creatures of the North. Though each would rather just have fun, each must try to steer the course of the other.
