BEHIND THE STORY...
At one point, Phil Roman had come into contact with someone who was connected to Madonna. Suddenly, it was suggested that she might be interested in doing something in animation. I had little knowledge of Madonna outside of a few songs. I went out and rented a laserdisc that featured her concert in Japan. I was immediately impressed with her energy and versatility. That night I came up with two premises.
Phil enjoyed the premises. He also liked that the ideas could be done in either full animation or a mix of a live-action Madonna and animation. We contacted Madonna’s folks about a meeting to discuss ideas. In typical Hollywood cliché, we were told that Madonna was very interested in animation, but really had no time for new projects. The contact mentioned her representative originally had only meant to say Madonna would be interested in doing animation “some day”, but not now. Just this year (2004), Madonna has been signed to be a voice in an animated feature.
And now my pitch...
MADONNA
Premises for a Primetime Special by John Cawley
ONE: When Madonna returns from an unhappy date, she wishes she was "a million miles away." In a flash she finds herself in a wildly colored world standing next to a handsome stranger. The stranger tells her she has gotten her wish and is now far from home. She now must decide, in a short time, whether she wants to return to her regular life, or continue to live in a land full of strange characters.
TWO: Madonna is a spoiled princess in a far-away land. Her father has tired of his daughter continually getting her way by using their fortune and her charms. When he makes a wish that she could learn humility and kindness, a mysterious stranger appears. The stranger tells her father he will teach her these values, but the price may be high. The father, certain he will fail, agrees. Madonna finds the stranger intriguing since he refuses to bend to her ways. In her attempts to win him, she tries buying him presents, taking him around the world and romancing him. Neither her money nor charms can win him over. When the stranger goes to leave, Madonna understands that there are some things that cannot be bought.
