BEHIND THE STORY...
At one point, a network exec told me point blank that I could never sell a series without artwork. I am not an artist. I decided to look around for some art that I could use. Rachel, my wife, does a lot of dog art for breeders, websites, merchandise and such. She has a piece that I’ve always liked of two Great Danes, back to back, looking a bit smug. I thought, why not create a series based on it? After all series had been based on a pre-existing toy, a poster, even a name. The networks liked the art, but, at the time, they were not interested in series about dogs.
And now my pitch...
FETCH!
[AKA THE DANE-GER DUO]
This Great Dane Duo Can Find Anything!
An Animated Series Proposal by John Cawley
When it positively, absolutely has to be found, a top-secret agency calls on the Dane Duo of Roku & Phoenix.
Their boss is not sure if these amazing, anthropomorphic dogs are aliens, mutants or just crazy canines. But he knows when it comes to finding lost, stolen or simply missing items; you can’t beat these dogs’ noses.
Around the town or around the world, Roku and Phoenix use their super canine senses, apparently unlimited arsenal of gadgets and their martial arts skills to recover any item they are sent to FETCH!
This series is Indiana Jones meets The Avengers with super action, sly humor and wild slapstick.
CHARACTERS
No one really knows where this pair of amazing Danes came from. Some suspect them to be from another planet or an alternate dimension. Perhaps they are mutants. Wherever they are from, they are on Earth now and using their incredible abilities to assist the government. Possessing the keen senses of canines, and skilled in martial arts and technology, they enjoy nothing more than sniffing out items no one else can touch (or find).
Apparently in their early 20s (in human years), the Danes are good friends who may kid about relationships, but are having too much fun treasure hunting for any kind of romance.
Roku – He is the down to Earth, rough and tumble male side of this dynamic doggie duo. Roku likes his gadgets user friendly and very powerful. He is just as apt to hit his opponent with the device as use it properly. His natural, floppy ears give him a softer look, but don’t be fooled. This is one hard-nosed dog that won’t roll over and play dead for anyone! Think of him as a detective in the Bogart mold.
Phoenix – She is the fashionable, feisty and ferocious side of this canine couple. Phoenix loves the world of high tech, hot fashion and fine dining. Her tall, cropped ears give her the look of dignity. The female equivalent of a suave James Bond-type spy, she seems to know all the right folks and the right moves to get around them.
Herbert Puppe – As a boss, Herbert is the best. He never cares how the Dane Duo gets the job done… too much. Like a “Charlie” (from Charlie’s Angels), Herbert’s main task is to contact Roku and Phoenix with their latest secret assignment.
