Fats and Nikoma
Original Pitch by John Cawley – 1997

BEHIND THE STORY...
My first attempt at a ‘buddy series’ was FATS AND NIKOMA. This show was another one based on characters in my life. Fats was a large orange cat we owned. His meow was the thinnest, sissy-est sound you could imagine. He dragged his large body around the house sniffling all the time. Nikoma is our Akita. We actually envision as a ‘surfer dude’ personality. It was while watching a film with the standard, wise Kung Fu master that it occurred mixing a staid character with one that was a spoiled brat would be funny. Nickelodeon and Disney enjoyed this concept. However, they were now thinking that animal cartoons were not the direction they were moving. A year later, I showed it to Cartoon Network. At the time, they were also thinking that animals were not likely to succeed. Unlike my other pitches, all that I still have are my initial notes of character descriptions.

And now my pitch...

Fats and Nikoma
An Animated Series Proposal by John Cawley

FATS – large (fat) tabby cat; Wears a Texas hat that’s too small; Wears cowboy boots that are too big; Whiney, complainer; Easily upset; Temper mental; Suspicious; Dependent on company; Spoiled; Nerdy. Think a cross between Joe Besser and PeeWee Herman

NIKOMA – well developed Akita dog; Wears sumo wrestler wrap; Calm (to a point); Fortune; cookie/vague wisdom; Speaks little; Cultured; Hidden violent side. Think a cross between Master Po (KungFu) and John Belushi’s Samurai
