BEHIND THE STORY...
During the 1980s, Hanna-Barbera was interested in properties that were linked to a celebrity. They had already begun talks with Eddie Murphy’s agent about a series and were looking for an idea he liked. I opted for a show that allowed him to portray various characters. Hanna-Barbera was amused by the pitch and kept it. Later, they found that Murphy, himself, thought the idea of doing Saturday Morning cartoons was “silly”.
And now my pitch...
EDDIE MURPHY in "Eddie Vs. Hollywood"
An Animated Series Proposal by John Cawley
Eddie Murphy portrays Eddie Martin, a hopeful new comic in Hollywood. Eddie's dream is to get into TV or motion pictures. His obstacle is getting in the door.
To solve this dilemma, Eddie frequents "Stars r Us," Hollywood's biggest employment agency. When a job becomes available at a studio, Eddie goes for it... as only Eddie can.
Eddie's ability to portray any one of a dozen characters comes in handy. Whether it's for stuntman, secretary, extra, kitchen help, computer programmer, or day care center counselor, Eddie can manufacture a personality and background to match the task.
However, once inside problems always arise. Sometimes he has overestimated his abilities and finds himself over his head in disasters. At these times it seems harder to get a foot "out" than to get a foot "in." Perhaps worse is when he is successful at the job and at risk of becoming a permanent "worker" rather than star.
In either case, he must exit and try another studio entrance via "Stars r Us."
